Fukuoka on a rainy day
A sheltered route with room for art, lunch and a slower afternoon.
Build a rainy day around two neighbouring indoor areas, not a list of attractions across the city. Tenjin and Nakasu-Kawabata work well together. This suggested route takes about four to six hours at a relaxed pace, including lunch; it is not entirely indoors.
Check the conditions before leaving
Ordinary rain and severe-weather warnings call for different plans. Check Japan Meteorological Agency warnings and subway service status. In severe weather, keep the day close to your accommodation and follow local instructions.
Carry a compact umbrella, a layer and shoes with grip. Save the hotel address and route offline. Choose lift access if stairs, a stroller or luggage would make underground passages difficult. Covered shopping streets still have open ends and wet floors.
Morning: Tenjin, without a long wet walk
Start at Tenjin Station on the Airport Line and follow signs into the Tenjin Underground Mall. Allow roughly 60–90 minutes for shops and a drink, longer if browsing is the point. The city’s rainy-day guide includes this underground shopping area.
Choose lunch in the connected station/shopping buildings, allowing time for a table. Check the building’s floor directory: a restaurant can be underground without being directly connected to every entrance. Avoid choosing a famous queue when the next stop has a fixed entry deadline.
Tenjin Station, Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station and Tenjin-minami Station are different stations. This route uses Tenjin on the Airport Line; follow that line’s signs before boarding.
Afternoon: Asian Art Museum and Kawabata
Take the Airport Line from Tenjin to Nakasu-Kawabata, one stop. Follow the museum/Riverain signs. The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum is on the seventh and eighth floors of Riverain Center, 3-1 Shimokawabata-machi.
Allow 90 minutes to two hours for the exhibition you choose. The museum normally closes on Wednesdays, or the following day when Wednesday is a national holiday, and has a New Year closure. Gallery access and general building hours differ; use the museum’s current visitor information for your date, exhibition ticket and last admission.
Afterwards, walk to the Kawabata shopping arcade for about 30–60 minutes of browsing or a snack. Expect a short exposed transfer between buildings and the arcade. This is a covered street, not a sealed indoor corridor; use the umbrella for its open ends and any detour.
The route at a glance
| Stage | Allow | Shelter check |
|---|---|---|
| Tenjin underground shops | 60–90 minutes | Inside the underground mall; check the entrance/lift closest to your start. |
| Lunch | 45–60 minutes | Choose an available table in the station or shopping complex. |
| Tenjin → Nakasu-Kawabata | 15–25 minutes overall | One subway stop, plus platform and building walks. |
| Asian Art Museum | 90–120 minutes | Indoors; check closure day, ticket and last admission. |
| Kawabata arcade | 30–60 minutes | Covered street with exposed approaches. |
Leave gaps for a café, a lift or a slower walking pace. With young children, shorten the museum visit or replace it with shopping and a meal in one complex. With mobility needs, check the museum accessibility information and station lift route before leaving.
If the museum is closed or rain gets worse
Keep the whole day around Tenjin’s underground mall and connected buildings. A bookshop, lunch and one department-store visit make a comfortable shorter plan. Alternatively, use Hakata Station’s shopping and restaurant buildings if that is closer to your hotel.
Canal City is another option, but parts of the complex and its approaches are exposed. Choose it for a specific indoor meal or shop rather than expecting every step to be dry. Check last orders before using it as an evening fallback.
If the rain eases, add a short riverside walk only after the indoor plan is complete. Yatai opening depends on the owner and weather; choose an indoor dinner first when conditions remain poor. See Fukuoka Shopping for areas and luggage, or Fukuoka Eats for a meal nearby.
